The Perservering Snail

A friend reminded us of one of Spurgeon’s most famous quotes:

By sheer perseverance, the snail made it to the ark.”

Sealed with the Holy Spirit

On Sunday, we had a great time taking a closer look at Ephesians 1:13-14. We payed special attention to the word sealed. In preparing, I explored the four main contexts in which the Greek word was employed. They are these:

1. Something was sealed as a security measure and to protect the contents. Tombs were often sealed with a big rock (e.g. Matt 27.66) to protect the remains. Even small wooden boxes and chests were sealed to keep their contents in safety until the owner chose to open them.

2. People in those days put a mark on their property to mark ownership – and they called that mark a seal. Cattle, sheep, and even slaves were often branded to show permanent ownership.

3. A seal was placed on documents to show authenticity. E.g., a king would apply his signet to a decree, and everyone who viewed it would know that it was from the king.

4. People would seal a package or letter for delivery. Only the recipient could break the seal.

Anyway you dice it, all of these ideas fit with what Paul taught in this passage. A seal is protective, shows authenticity and ownership, and is intended to be permanent (or definite until a specific future time). The seal of the Holy Spirit allows the believer to feel secure in his relationship with God. Indeed, he is standing on a rock that cannot be moved!

FAQ on Upcoming Plans

Here are the questions we get asked most often lately, followed by how we respond.

Q. Why, all of the sudden, are you making plans to live in the USA for a year?

A. There are actually many reasons. The five reasons most central to our thinking are the following. 1) My residence permit is being annulled on a very minor (and debatable) technicality. 2) I have to wait one year before reapplying for a new permit. 3) The new visa laws make it impractical (and very expensive) to live here on visas. We would have to leave the country every three months. 4) During the last seven years, we have been on US soil only three months, and we really sense the need to reconnect. 5) The bottom line is that we believe that this is the path the Father has for us now.

Q. When are you coming, how long are you staying?

A. We are planning to leave here on June 23, flying through Germany and arriving into the US late on the 24th, and at this point we plan to stay until July, 2009.

Q. Is this a vacation?

A. No. Hopefully it will be a refreshing time, but we will be busy as bees, we are certain. We do plan to take a 3-week vacation at some point though.

Q. Where do you plan to live?

A. In central Florida, near or in my hometown. The exact details as to where we will live are not quite settled yet.

Q. What will you do for the year?

A. This is also not totally nailed down yet, but it looks like we will 1) spread the word about what is going on here, 2) serve in our home church, 3) make one or two trips (within the USA) to represent the work, and 4) work on finishing a graduate degree.

Q. What do David and Hannah think about it?

A. David is excited – talking about fishing, visiting grandparents, etc., and going outside with short sleeves in December. Hannah does not really get it yet.

Q. What are you going to do with all your stuff and your apartment while you are gone?

A. That is a great question.

Q. What will be the first thing you do in the USA?

A. Before or after Starbucks?

Here is a slightly funny clip that, if nothing else, serves as an excellent reminder to keep the narcissism in check.

Ephesians 1.13-14

Ephesians 1:13-14 has my attention this morning. It is a loaded passage, full of glorious truth for the believer. I can hardly wait to teach this on Sunday. In the course of trying to unpack the text and bend my mind to understanding it, I translated it into English and Russian from the NA27. My English one turned out like this:

In him you also, hearing the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and having believed in him, were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance, until redemption of the possession, to the praise of his Glory.

By comparison, it is dissimilar to my favorite English translation, the ESV , on many points. I maintained the Greek participle form of ‘hearing’ and the tense approximation and form of ‘having believed’. I also played it safe and went with a literal translation of “ ” (until redemption of the possession). For me, that phrase is the hardest to understand. It means either that God will redeem us finally as his possession or that we will redeem our possession, presumably the full realization of our inheritance. The jury has not complete come back yet, but I lean towards the former. The ESV translators took some interpretive license, going with the latter. Here is my Russian translation, which bears more resemblance to the RST than my English one did to the ESV (probably because the RST is more accurate to the Greek on this passage):

Keeping Perspective

With just over a month remaining, we are sometimes finding it a challenge to stay focused on the things we have to do before we hit the road. Besides tidying up the org. for our absence and keeping up with the regular meetings & teaching, we are also planning an, uh, immersion meeting on June 8th. On the heals of that are three days of leadership meetings. Then, as if that were not plenty enough to do, we will enjoy a four-day field-wide conference, which our team is hosting. Oh, and we should probably figure out what to do with our apartment/stuff while we are gone.

But, hey, all things in perspective:

9 Good Reasons for Being a Photographer

Photographer Bill Walsh has finished an excellent (and unique to the blogosphere) series of posts at the DG blog about why he engages in the art of photography for the glory of God. The Big Trip

We are planning to leave here on the 23rd of June. That should get us to Florida by the evening of June 24th.

That’s My Boy

Timothy has more or less learned to walk. I will try to post some video soon of the little guy toddling around.

Winds of Change

The “something big” thing isn’t so big, I guess – except to us. Maya, the children and I are packing up everything that we think we will need for the next year. It is a long story  having to do with documents, etc. The short of it is that we are planning to live for the next 12 months or so in central Florida. For us, it is a pretty major transition. I will blog more on this in the coming days.

May 1st Snow

Here is more evidence of a severe global warming trend: a snow storm on May 1st :-) . This photo was taken from our kitchen window this AM.
