Fight the New Stormwater Tax

This only affects a small number of local readers, but I wanted to make this document available to help property owners here who may be hit with this new tax. Download this document, which a friend of mine put together, and do your part to fight the tax.

Upcoming Russian Course

I’ve decided: I will be teaching  a conversational Russian course again this year. If you are interested, please drop me an email. Classes will begin the second week of September in the usual classroom. The day and time and text book will be determined soon.

Also, I have been mulling the idea of starting a web-based tutoring service for students taking college Russian. But I need to give that one more thought.

All information about the Russian course will be posted here.

Brothers, We Are Not Professionals

From John Piper’s book by the same name:

WE PASTORS are being killed by the professionalizing of the pastoral ministry. The mentality of the professional is not the mentality of the prophet. It is not the mentality of the slave of Christ. Professionalism has nothing to do with the essence and heart of the Christian ministry. The more professional we long to be, the more spiritual death we will leave in our wake. For there is no professional childlikeness (Matt. 18:3); there is no professional tenderheartedness (Eph. 4:32); there is no professional panting after God (Ps. 42:1).

But our first business is to pant after God in prayer. Our business is to weep over our sins (James 4:9). Is there professional weeping? Our business is to strain forward to the holiness of Christ and the prize of the upward call of God (Phil. 3:14); to pummel our bodies and subdue them lest we be cast away (1 Cor. 9:27); to deny ourselves and take up the blood-spattered cross daily (Luke 9:23). How do you carry a cross professionally? We have been crucified with Christ; yet now we live by faith in the one who loved us and gave Himself for us (Gal. 2:20). What is professional faith?

Bitter-Sweet News to the Good News Chuch

[Read more...]

An Outstanding Joy

It is a little hard to see, thanks to the full trap set placed conveniently in front of the baptistery (the drums sound great, though).  But this photo is of my soon to be seven-year-old son, David, and I just a second before I baptized him last Sunday. He clearly understands the Gospel, and I could not be a happier dad.

My Grandma Could Whip You Easy

And she probably could, especially considering she is about to be awarded her black belt in Taekwondo. If you missed the story on WESH TV last night, click here to see the video, or here to read the story. I’m not kidding – that is my 77-year-old grandmother in the video breaking a board with her foot. Go ahead, try to steal her purse. :-)

Open Source Applications – Why Do We Buy Software?

When my computer crashed a few days ago, I lost everything, including my Microsoft Office. Last year I bought and downloaded the MS Office  from the internet with an academic discount. I have no idea where my backups are or where the unlock code is. I’m sure I will figure those things out. In the meantime, I still need to work. Last week, my tasks included writing a sermon for Sunday and two Bible study lessons, not to mention everything else. Thus, to quickly get back to productivity, I downloaded OpenOffice.org and Mozilla Firefox, Thunderbird and Sunbird. The funny thing is that I am so impressed with Open Office Writer that I am not looking very hard for my MS Office backup. It actually has some features that MS Office lacks, like direct output to PDF. And its interface is much less annoying. I still like OneNote, and Sunbird does not sync as easily as Outlook, but open source solutions have  a lot of potential.

Now I am wondering how difficult it will be to write academic papers with Writer (using Turabian form). Using Microsoft Word for such things has been a serious test of my sanctification. So I’ll give Writer a chance, and if that doesn’t work I’ll break down and go with Nota Bene like everyone else.

Driscoll is Coming to Logos

Logos Bible Software is publishing about 10 years worth of Mark Driscoll’s sermons (click here to see the pre-pub). Not sure if I need it or not, but Mark Driscoll himself almost persuaded me in the video below. I have long wanted the ability to criticize him in a foot-noted way. :-) Actually, Driscoll is doing a great work for the Lord and I am happy that Logos is publishing his transcripts.

From the Virtual Brink and Back

On Tuesday evening, my computer refused to go to work. It would not even let me load Windows in safe mode or with a boot disk. I’m still not sure what happened or why Windows broke. If I were more savvy I might have figured it out. As it was, I went looking for my recovery disk.

After a couple of hours, I was able to format the disk and freshly install the OS and my apps. The only downside is the data I lost. I hadn’t backed up for months. Thanks to my iPod and a free trial of MobileMe, my contact list and passwords were saved. So it was mostly documents that died a sudden death.

The irony of it all is that Tuesday morning I stopped by a store and picked up a large-capacity flash drive for the very purpose of backing up critical data. Monday would have been better timing.

Web Work

I am no web designer. Nevertheless, with the help of commercial templates I’ve put together a few web sites lately. A few months ago I finished building this one for my church. Since then, I made this site for a friend who raises and sells horses (it still needs a bit of adjusting) and just today I finished this one for the Seminole Baptist Association.

The process is much more enjoyable than I originally expected.

Update: Add to the list this landing page. Oh, and this one too.
